How to become a radio DJ About Radio DJ
In general, a radio DJ or radio host does not need to be able to put together records, because his work is in a completely different way of handling music. On the one hand, it simplifies your life: it may even seem to you that absolutely everyone can become a radio DJ. But, alas, everything is not so simple: just wanting to work on the radio is not enough, you need to develop yourself and broaden your horizons – and in what exactly directions, you will learn further.
In addition to the ability to handle a computer, vinyl and CD-ROMs, you must have a beautiful voice, good imagination and the ability to instantly clothe any thought you like in a coherent and interesting speech.
Everything is clear with the voice and imagination: the radio does not “sell” you, but your voice, and what you say largely depends on your imagination and ability to navigate in different situations.
The interest of your speech is a rather subjective thing, at least it can be determined with a simple test: join the conversations of different companies of your friends and follow the reaction of people – do you bother them after a dozen seconds of communication, do they get tired of your society? Or are they even drawn to you, since you are perfectly telling different stories and can always keep up the conversation? The second is definitely better than the first.
Further, in the circle of friends, try to take the topic “from the ceiling” and give a non-stop monologue for at least 60 seconds – such that friends would be interested. The themes “music” and “sex” are too simple in this case. Try “tractor drivers” and “Newton’s bin” (if you don’t know what it is, the situation becomes just perfect).
It’s just fine if, besides imagination, you have such equally important qualities as a well-suspended language and resourcefulness. It is unlikely that you will immediately receive airtime for your own radio show, which means that you will have to put the tracks strictly on the playlist, which remains approximately the same for at least a month. That is, every day you have to say different things about the same songs. Ready for it?
In general, like DJing, radio DJing is more attractive because of the myths surrounding it than because of the fascination of the profession. They say that no one comes to the radio just like that – and this is true. Do not expect to immediately go live, start your show and even more so become famous. Start small and the rest will come to you if you really want to.
So, you decided that radio is the goal of your life. Where to begin?
To get started, I’ll give you just four tips:
sign up for “oratory” courses or “rhetoric and speech” courses – the teachers will teach you how to properly structure your speech and speak correctly. One of the strengths of the Soviet school of radio, which, alas, many modern presenters decided not to adopt, was precisely the language base: what the presenters said, and – even more so – how they said it. It’s worth learning from the Soviet leaders. So rejoice if someone from the “old people” runs the training process
attend acting classes. Only not in any one-day firms, but at least at well-known theater universities. If the acquired skills do not take you to the stage, but they are very useful on the air. After all, the radio, like the theater, requires you to express yourself in conditions of limited opportunities
Be sure to learn English to the level of free spoken language. They themselves probably noticed how pleasant it is to listen to the names of tracks from pro-presenters who can’t even read them correctly. It turns out some kind of rapper “Loving You” instead of “Loving You”, which is simply a shame for “voice on the air”, especially on radio stations, the format of which involves a huge amount of Western music
study the history of music, listen to works in different styles and learn to distinguish grunge from heavy metal, house from hardcore, etc. I’ll tell you right away that no one will demand such knowledge from you except yourself: it’s nice to be able to compare the “early work of the X-band” with the “Igrek band”, while explaining how the preferences of the musicians changed album after album. Respect for the audience is impossible to buy, but you can earn
Be more educated and better than others: there are too many dreamers on the planet and too few who will really achieve something. Let your resume, which the program director of the radio station will get acquainted with, clearly trace your desire to be part of the radio life. Even if your experience is reflected only in the lines “manager”, “programmer” or something equally useless for working on the air, the column “education” can correct the situation – if it makes it clear that you are actually breathing the dream of radio DJing .
Of course, it’s better not just to attend different courses, but also send your resume. But remember – the number of radio stations is limited, and sooner or later you just torture personnel officers with information about your person. Do not hurry.
If the soul really breaks into the air – understand, you have it! Use your home computer.
